Buying an 85-inch television is a little different from buying a normal TV. At this size, you immediately notice picture quality problems, motion issues and poor contrast because everything is amplified. I wanted something that could actually take advantage of the huge screen without spending the kind of money some premium 85-inch TVs cost. After looking at several options, the Hisense U7SG stood out because of the combination of Mini-LED technology, brightness, high refresh rate and gaming features.
Overall, I think Hisense has put together a very impressive TV for the price.
The first thing you notice is obviously the size. An 85-inch mini-LED screen completely changes the experience compared with a 65-inch or even a 75-inch TV.
Movies feel much more cinematic, sports are considerably more immersive, and games almost feel like they are filling your entire field of vision.
Make sure you measure your space before ordering because this TV is huge. The screen itself is roughly 74 inches wide, so this isn’t something you casually place on a small entertainment center. Wall mounting is probably going to be the preferred option for a lot of people, but either way, I would definitely recommend having two people available for installation.
Once it is set up, though, the picture is the real highlight.
The Mini-LED backlighting makes a major difference, especially with HDR content. Bright scenes can get extremely bright, while darker areas maintain much better contrast than I expected from a TV in this price range. Watching movies with a combination of dark scenes, bright lights and explosions really shows what the panel can do.
Black levels are also very good for an LED-based television. This obviously isn’t an OLED where every individual pixel turns completely off, but the local dimming does a surprisingly good job of controlling light in dark areas.
On an 85-inch Mini-LED screen, that is especially important because blooming and poor black levels become much easier to notice on a screen this large.
Colors are another strong point. They are vibrant without necessarily looking unnatural. Nature documentaries, animated movies, sports uniforms and video games all benefit from the wider color range. HDR content in particular can look excellent once you find the picture settings you prefer.
There are plenty of picture modes available, including Filmmaker Mode. I would recommend spending a little time experimenting instead of simply leaving everything on the factory settings.
For me, sports are one of the best uses for a television like this.
Football, soccer, basketball and other fast-moving sports look fantastic on an 85-inch screen. The high refresh rate helps motion remain smooth, and the brightness is particularly useful if your living room has windows or you normally watch games during the daytime.
The anti-reflection screen is also helpful in brighter rooms. It doesn’t magically eliminate every reflection, especially if you have a strong light directly opposite the screen, but it handles glare much better than many glossy televisions.
Gaming is probably where the U7SG mini-LED screen becomes even more interesting.
The native 165Hz refresh rate gives PC gamers a lot of flexibility, while PS5 and Xbox Series X owners can take advantage of 4K high-refresh-rate gaming, VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode. FreeSync Premium Pro is also included.
Playing games on an 85-inch mini-LED screen with HDR and a high frame rate is a completely different experience from playing on a standard television.
Input feels responsive in Game Mode, and the Game Bar makes it easy to check or adjust gaming settings without digging through several layers of menus. For anyone connecting multiple consoles, a gaming PC and a sound system, having four HDMI 2.1 ports is also a big advantage.
I appreciate that Hisense didn’t give you one or two advanced HDMI ports and then force you to decide which devices deserve them.
Google TV works well as the operating system. If you’ve used Google TV before, everything feels familiar. Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Max and most of the usual streaming applications are readily available.
The home screen gives you recommendations from different services, which some people will like more than others. Personally, I mostly care about being able to quickly access the apps I use, and it handles that without much trouble.
The interface is generally responsive, and voice control is useful when you don’t want to type a movie title using the remote.
The remote itself is also better than some basic television remotes. The backlighting is particularly useful when watching movies in a dark room. That’s a small feature, but once you have a backlit remote, you start wondering why it isn’t standard on every television.
Sound quality surprised me as well.
Normally, one of my first recommendations with a large TV would be to immediately buy a soundbar. I still think a good soundbar or surround system is worthwhile if you want a true home theater experience, but the built-in audio here is better than I expected.
Dialogue is clear, there is more depth than the thin sound you get from many flat-panel TVs, and Dolby Atmos support helps create a larger soundstage.
For casual viewing, sports or regular television, I could easily live with the built-in speakers.
For movies, however, a TV this large almost deserves a dedicated audio system. Pairing an 85-inch picture with a good Dolby Atmos soundbar or receiver setup takes the experience to another level.
There are a few things worth mentioning before buying.
First, this is still a Mini-LED LCD television, not an OLED. In difficult dark scenes, you may occasionally notice some blooming around very bright objects on black backgrounds. Viewing angles can also change the picture somewhat if you sit very far off-center.
Neither issue has been a major problem for normal viewing, but they are worth mentioning.
Second, the size requires planning. Moving, unboxing and installing an 85-inch mini-LED screen is not a one-person project. Check your wall, TV stand, doorway and installation area before it arrives.
Third, there are a lot of picture-processing options. Some people may like the extra motion smoothing and AI processing, while others may prefer a more natural image. I would recommend experimenting with the settings instead of assuming the default mode is the best one.
What impresses me most about the U7SG is how few major compromises there are for such a large television.
You get Mini-LED local dimming, excellent brightness, strong HDR performance, a 165Hz panel, serious gaming features, Google TV, good built-in audio and a massive 85-inch screen.
That’s a lot of capability in one package.
Pros: Huge 85-inch picture, excellent brightness, impressive Mini-LED contrast, strong HDR performance, vibrant colors, 165Hz refresh rate, excellent gaming features, four HDMI 2.1 ports, good glare handling, Google TV and better-than-average built-in sound.
Cons: Very large and difficult to install alone, some blooming can still occur in challenging dark scenes, off-angle viewing isn’t perfect, and getting the best picture may require adjusting the factory settings.
Overall, I think the Hisense U7SG makes the most sense for someone who wants a genuinely big-screen experience without giving up modern picture and gaming technology.
If you’re looking for an 85-inch Mini-LED screen primarily for movies, sports and gaming, this model offers an impressive combination of screen size and performance.
It isn’t trying to be a budget TV with a huge screen attached to it. The Mini-LED backlighting, high refresh rate, HDR capabilities and gaming features actually take advantage of the size.
That’s what makes the difference.
Once you watch a good 4K movie, a major sporting event or a modern game on an 85-inch mini-LED screen with this level of brightness and contrast, going back to a smaller television becomes surprisingly difficult.
